For the last 20 years, photographer Mathieu Pernot has been documenting a different kind of contemporary history – at the margins of society, with travellers and the homeless, in deprived suburbs, with migrants, in prisons. In his complex work, documentary photography abandons any claims to a non-judgemental approach: Pernot uses it to participate, explore and tell a story, like a police archive or an eyewitness report. By recording what he sees without fear, Pernot's work has become a voice and a memory bank for people who don't always keep accounts of their own movements.
