Halsman’s lens framed some of the most iconic shots of the 20th century: Salvador Dalí’s moustache reaching for his eyebrows, Marliyn Monroe leaping in the air, Hitchcock puffing on a cigar crowned with a bird, Einstein sticking his tongue out. But beyond his work with celebrities and his long collaboration with Dalí, the Latvian-American Halsman left an indelible imprint on fashion photography, reportage and experimental imagery – he even shot 101 covers for ‘Life’ magazine. In this show, the Jeu de Paume covers Halsman’s prolific career from his beginnings in Paris in the 1930s to his immense postwar success in New York.
