The eternal struggle between order and chaos in art can be seen rampaging through the Musée du Quai Branly for the duration of this exhibition. Drawn in part from France’s great anthropological collections, artworks understood as some of humanity’s first are placed in opposition to more modern, contemporary creations by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Thomas Hirschhorn, Myriam Mihindou or Joanathan Meese. In stacking these extraordinary contrasts opposite each other Jean de Loisy, the event’s curator, provides a visual investigation of the manner in which artists have, since the dawn of time, attempted to understand and tame the chaos of the universe – or in which, sometimes, they have celebrated its disorder.
