Sure, Australia's East Coast may hog the limelight when it comes to famous beaches (hello, Bondi), but here in Western Australia, the scorching summer temps, the impossibly blue Indian Ocean and powdery white sands put our shores in a class of their own.

Yes, it's hard to choose a favourite beach in Perth, so we've picked out some of our go-to swimming spots. There's Cottesloe for picture-postcard charm, Scarborough for its nightlife, Trigg for serious waves and Rotto for a dreamy getaway. So grab the sunscreen, your bathers, the chilly bin and a beach umbrella – it's time to discover why Perth is Australia's unsung MVP of the sea. And while you're hanging out at the beach, make sure to catch the sun dipping into the Indian Ocean. In a word? Spectacular! Here are the best beaches in Perth.

Editors’ favourite beaches in Perth:

  • 🌊 Best surf beach: Trigg Beach
  • đŸ–ïž Best family-friendly beach: Mettams Pool
  • 💎 Best hidden gem: Mullaloo Beach

PSA: Ocean and beach conditions can change rapidly. Swimming at an unpatrolled beach is not recommended. Enter the water at your own risk and be aware of your swimming abilities.

Perth's best beaches

1. Coogee Beach

Coogee is one of Perth’s best beaches with Western Australia’s white sand and vibrant sapphire Indian Ocean. Omeo Wreck is a historical landmark that lies 25 meters offshore, ready for all to explore. The ship came adrift from Fremantle port in 1905, was bogged in the sand and has been gradually falling apart since. Make sure you check the wind before you go – an Easterly is always best. Be sure to bring a friend and your snorkelling gear.

Good for: Swimming (it has a shark-netted area) and snorkelling around the shipwreck.

How far from the city? 23km (30-minute drive) south of the Perth CBD and just 10 minutes from Fremantle.

Is the beach patrolled? On weekends and public holidays between October and April.

The Summer X Salt Markets run from October and stretch into the summer months and are definitely worth a look!
