Back in May, the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) announced a new initiative designed to help those with mobility issues, making pathways more accessible and ticketing vehicles blocking sidewalks. Since the new initiative rolled out over 45 days ago, things are looking pretty pricey for car-owning residents.

Since the induction of this new crackdown, the number of tickets issued for the six mobility-related parking violations the initiative is targeting has skyrocketed 154 percent. At this time last year, the PPA wrote 10,124 tickets throughout the city, while this year, that number has more than doubled, clocking in at 25,797 tickets. That’s a lot of hand cramps!

While the initiative is great for the pedestrians it aims to help, drivers should be aware of their actions and consequences. Unsurprisingly, these violations seem more widespread in areas with a denser population, like North and South Philadelphia and Fishtown.

Now that you know the PPA is on the hunt for problematic parking, perhaps it’s time to reel in your parking behavior and keep those sidewalks accessible.
