It’s safe to say that no city in the world is as closely linked to an item of food as Philadelphia is to the cheesesteak.

According to local legend, Philadelphian brothers Pat and Harry Olivieri were the first people to ever serve chopped steak on an Italian roll with onions and cheese. A local cab driver is believed to have bought the first-ever Philly Cheesesteak for ten cents back in 1933. By 1940 Pat had even opened up his own cheesesteak stand, more on which alter. Over the last 85 years, though, there have been many threats to Philadelphia’s cheesesteak throne. Pretty much every street in the city has at least one restaurant serving them up. Didn't know you could actually get them delivered? Well here you go, click below to find out which are the top five.

1. Pat’s King Of Steaks/Geno’s Steaks

The eponymous King Of Steaks is none other than Pat Olivieri, which is enough to secure the store’s spot on this list. However, Pat’s King Of Steaks is also nearly as famous for its feud with Geno’s Steaks, which opens in 1966 directly across the street. Both have become institutions, regularly have lines around the block, and, more importantly, are open 24 hours a day. Although, it must be said, that Geno’s now actually has the better reputation amongst cheesesteak aficionados.

2. Spot Gourmet Burgers

A cute and cosy spot in Brewerytown, Spot Gourmet Burger is unsurprisingly known for its array of incredibly tasty burgers. However, its cheesesteak is just as impressive. In fact, it was even named Philadelphia Magazine’s Best Cheesesteak back in 2014. That’s because of its dedication to using pristine ingredients, while they’re also committed to giving away free kids meals to children in need, too.

3. Joe's Steaks + Soda

Joe’s Steaks & Soda boast that they’ve “perfected the cheesesteak” is a big one to make. Luckily for them, just one bite of the mom-and-pop steak shop’s loaded sandwich proves that they might be right. Purists will be happy, too, as the original location all the way up in Torresdale opened in 1949. Thankfully there’s now one in Fishtown, too.

4. Frizwit

A new contender to the cheesesteak crown emerged during the pandemic, when Frizwit’s incarnation was named on Food & Wine’s Best Dishes We Ate In 2020 list. It made complete sense to anyone who had consumed it, though, as its use of high-quality steak and roll, combined with beer cheese sauce and perfectly charred onions, immediately set it apart from its peers.

5. Cleavers Steaks

Cleavers’ regularly finds it way onto lists of Philadelphia’s best cheesesteaks. For good reason. Not only is their classic version sensational, but it hasn’t been afraid to reimagine the cheesesteak in a variety of different ways, too, with The Block, Papa’s Favorite, and Effin’ Hot all just as satisfying. If, somehow, none of the above tickle your fancy, then there are several other top-notch options on GrubHub for Philly Cheesesteaks, including Charlie's Roast Pork, Chubby’s Steaks, Oh Brother Philly, Ishkabibble’s, Shank's Original, and Campo's Philly Cheesesteak.
