1. Pera Turkish Cuisine

This sleek and modern Turkish restaurant only just opened its doors in Northern Liberties at the start of April, but it has quickly become a favorite in the area. It’s easy to see why, too, because its authentic options include meze platters, flatbreads, slow-cooked meats and an array of saucy vegetables. It also has a bakery packed with pastries, baklava and puddings. The babaganoush, doner gyro and moussaka are incredibly tasty, you have to make sure you end your meal with the kunefe.

CM Chicken’s brand of Korean-style poultry arrived in Philadelphia from Chicago in February 2022, setting up shop in University City. Word of mouth quickly spread as students flocked to the restaurant to devour its eclectic takes on the bird. The original garlic soy has become a firm favorite, quickly followed by the cheese monster chicken, which arrives covered in a cheese powder. For those of you who want it even cheesier, a creamy cheese dipping sauce is provided as a side, too. You can’t really go wrong with anything on their menu, though.

3. Joey's Table

After initially opening in March 2020, as a way to bring people fresh food during lockdown, Joey’s Table’s sandwiches, rice bowls, French fries, hummus and tzatziki became so popular that in February it opened up a kitchen at the Underground Arts venue. Joey’s Table has only gone from strength to strength during this time, as diners have praised its fresh, flavorful and original approaches to these fulfilling meals.

4. Kurry Shack

South Philadelphia residents will already know Kurry Shack’s menu like the back of their hands, as it has been serving the area since 2019. But the restaurant’s decision to open up new locations in Center City, Old City and Francisville — all on the same night in August, 2021 — means that people across Philly can now enjoy its always reliable versions on Indian classics. Those of you looking for tips should enjoy its Vegetable Biryani and Special Tandoori Mix Grill, while its Bhuna always hits the spot, too.

5. Mochi Ring Philadelphia

Philadelphians have never been shy about their love of deserts, especially when it comes to donuts, as the success of Federal and Beiler’s proves. These iconic establishments now have a new rival in the shape of Mochi Ring Donuts, which are made with glutinous rice flour instead of wheat flour. This means that the donuts are stretchier and chewier. They also have a great collection of donuts on offer, including brown sugar milk tea, taro, matcha, in-jeol-mi, black sesame and ube. If you’re looking for something more traditional, you don’t need to fret, because they also serve Nutella, cinnamon, Oreo, milk chocolate, strawberry and glazed.
