Carol Stirton-Broad uses a variety of unconventional materials in her mosaics, such as toys, handmade tiles, animal teeth, and fabric. Though often abstract, the finished works share a story that is meant to be interpreted and admired through these objects. Stirton-Broad’s creations consist of vignettes of dolls embedded in their own mosaic environments, seductive slate and gold-plated pieces, and narrative-filled “begging bowls” – a traditional Buddhist object reinterpreted by the artist to convey various stories. Though distinct in their styles, all the works coalesce to form a unified exhibition that defies the conventional ideas of mosaic.
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and Carol Stirton-Broad invite you to experience the allure of Collections during the pay-what-you-wish opening reception on Philadelphia’s First Friday, a citywide celebration of art, on March 6, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Refreshments and light fare will be served. http://bit.ly/1yw6Mwh
