Curator's Talk & Opening Reception: Dandy Lion says
Join us in celebrating the opening of Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity on Friday, September 18. Curator Shantrelle P. Lewis joins us for a guided talk through the exhibition, exploring the cultural significance surrounding dandyism, highlighting particular images chosen for the exhibition.

The talk begins at 6:30 pm with a reception to follow.
This event is free and open to the public.

The exhibition runs September 18 - November 14, 2015.

Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity seeks to distinguish the historical and contemporary expressions of the Black Dandy phenomenon in popular culture. The first comprehensive exhibition of its kind, Dandy Lion highlights young men in city-landscapes who defy stereotypical and monolithic understandings of Black masculinity by remixing Victorian-era fashion with traditional African sartorial sensibilities.

Dandy Lion confronts the myth of the young Black man as "thug" via the juxtaposition of an alternative style of dress. Using the African aesthetic and swagger as a point of departure, dandy lions appropriate classical European fashion elements to articulate a self-actualized identity. The men photographed are exceptional in both style and manners and provide the opportunity for a paradigm shift to occur as it relates to how men of African descent are seen and treated by society-at-large.

The exhibiting artists at Silver Eye include: Hanif Abdur-Rahim, Jody Ake, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Harness Hamese, Allison Janae Hamilton, Jamala Johns, Caroline Kaminju, Terrance Nance, Arteh Odidja, Numa Perrier, Radcliffe Roye, Daniele Tamagni, and Rog Walker.

The work presented in Dandy Lion at Silver Eye Center for Photography is part of a larger curatorial project that consists of approximately 130 pieces from almost 30 emerging and world-renowned photographers and filmmakers from various regions of the African Diaspora, including the United States, South Africa, the Congo, and Western Europe. Photographs from additional Dandy Lion artists will be available for viewing on Silver Eye's website for the duration of the exhibition.

Dandy Lion is a traveling exhibition curated by Shantrelle P. Lewis and is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago.
