After an after an eleven year hiatus, former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan celebrates the release a new album and band project called Sun King Warriors on Saturday night, March 12, 2016 at Mr. Small’s Theater in Millvale co-owned by friend and former Root bandmate Liz Berlin.

The band is best described as a mix of groove rock, Americana and two tons of drums. Think Led Zeppelin III & IV mixed with Rusted Root’s “When I Woke” era positivity & rhythmic intensity, and the authentic vocal emotion of REM’s Michael Stipe.

Opening the show will be Donovan’s daughter Tupelo and guitarist Jeremy Levin. Concert goers are invited to bring a non-perishable food item for the local Millvale food bank for which patrons will receive a Sun King Warriors bumper sticker.

Donovan founded the Sun King Warriors in 2013 with a group of close friends including veteran musicians Bryan Fazio and Harry Pepper on congas and percussion, bassist Kent Tonkin, and guitarist Dan Murphy. in 2015 the band added Pittsburgh music scene fixtures Kevin McDonald (Grapevine, Tres Lads) and session drummer Joe Marini to round out the group. In this project, Donovan writes, plays guitar, sings, and occasionally jumps behind the kit for the band.

In his own words, Donovan says: “I’m so thrilled to have an opportunity to play live music again! Those who come to see “the Warriors” will discover an enticing, joy explosion of a show that dares you not to dance. You can expect to experience catchy original music you can sing along to, surging “drums only” extravaganzas with I join Marini on the band’s second drum kit, scriptless “in the moment” creations, and covers of bands ranging from The Clash to Cream to the Ramones to Rusted Root.”
