Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboys are musical gunslingers, vaudevillian hucksters, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. Between heartbreaking ballads and hell-raising sing-alongs, the Cowboys entertain, inspire, and get audiences involved in the show.

Jonathan Byrd is a preacher's son, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Fifteen years into his music career, Byrd's songs are campfire favorites at folk festivals. The Chicago Tribune called Byrd "one of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years."

Cellist Paul Ford played bass with songwriter James Deely and Pittsburgh's rock legend Norm Nardini, opening
for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red, Hot & Blue tour in 1992. In 2001, Ford worked with The Community Music Project in Chapel Hill NC, helping to record and produce unsigned local artists. Paul joined the local theatre troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention, switching from bass to cello in 2009 and contributing to the scores for nine shows over seven years, winning 4 Indy Awards for best original music.

Electric guitarist Johnny Waken met Paul Ford in Norm Nardini's band, and they worked together for six years in the U.S. and Europe. A celebrated prodigy, Waken was invited to play Jon Bon Jovi's birthday and Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan's wedding. Johnny left the music business in 1993 to pursue primitive skills and hiked the entire Appalachian trail in 2000 with eleven pounds of gear. Reuniting with his old band mate Paul Ford in 2006, Waken helped to create those award-winning scores for Paperhand Puppet Intervention, adding mandolin, harmonica, and musical saw to his prodigious musical skills.

Between Jonathan, Johnny, and Paul, they have shared shows with Steve Cropper, Nanci Grifftith, The Blues Brothers Band, Joe Walsh, John McCutcheon, Joan Jett, Steppenwolf, Hot Rize, Jon Bon Jovi, Steep Canyon Rangers, Peter Rowan, and many more.
