Banging away on her guitar, it was there she realized her desire to create something of a Michael Hedges percussive-funk but with the lyrically rich songwriter slant which was found so closely outside her doorstep. "I came to learn that to do anything intricate and do it well, you need to incorporate repetitive practice for hours on end and build a more complex skill upon a simple skill." It is for this reason she realized, it was time to pause and go somewhere quiet to develop what she saw. So she returned, after a semi-successful run in Nashville, to her very rural hometown of upstate NY. The journey which followed included months of isolation in the rural woods practicing 6-8 hours a day, a move to 4 different cities, and the challenge of learning a strict discipline that eluded her for nearly a decade. 5 tumultuous years later, filled with living in 4 different cities, stark nomadic tendencies and hard work, Kelly is finally making waves with that very vision. 2014 is the year Kelly Zullo arrived. After spending a mere 3-4 months in Columbus, OH, she was voted 614 Magazine's "Best Solo Musician", played a dozen of the best local festivals, wrote/performed a song for the documentary "For You & Me": screened at the Ohio Theatre's sold out local premiere. She won the yearlong singer-songwriter contest for the "Columbus Songwriter Association" and was invited to Nashville on scholarship to participate in a songwriting and publisher meetup/workshop. She ends the year with a feature in Guitar World Magazine and an appearance in the show "Woodchopper's Ball" at Kent Stage which features 9 of the top acoustic guitarists from around the country. In addition to her solo performances, touring and songwriting, Zullo is currently working with a left of center bluegrass/ funk trio called Kelly Zullo & The Phunkgrass. The high energy acoustic guitar stylings of Zullo, violin of Kristen Peters and upright bass contributions of Daniel DeSantis fuse a fast acoustic funk approach to guitar with the mystery and purity of what is traditionally a bluegrass accompaniment. They release their first live CD in January 2015, called "Live At Natalie's".
