Wigle Whiskey says
It's Christmas in July.

We've stumbled (very, very happily) upon not one, but TWO barrels of Smoked Bourbon that are ready for release. We're releasing the surprise 125 full size bottles and 250 half size bottles on Thursday, July 21st at 5 PM at the Northside Barrelhouse. Milkshakes, live music from AE Honick, food from Pittsburgh Smokehouse, bourbon sampling, and general rejoicing .

$15 ticket includes milkshake, cocktail, bourbon sampling, and entry to the bash!

Specs: 55% organic yellow corn, 33% cherrywood smoked malted barley, 8% caramel-60 malted barley, 4% pale malted barley. Aged in new, charred 15-gallon barrels.
What? Smoked bourbon is the third in our line of bourbons and built from 55% organic yellow corn, a "barely legal" bourbon, with the balance made of malted barley. The Feds define bourbon whiskey a lot of different ways, but the most noteworthy requirement is that the mash bill be not less than 51% corn. Corn has higher sugar content than rye, wheat or malted barley, which is good for yield, but contributes less flavor.

Inspiration: By keeping corn at a lower percentage, we have room to add more charismatic grains. In this case, mostly malted barley smoked over cherry wood, which contributes sweet, fruity notes, with the right amount of smoke and barbecue. Small amounts of caramel and pale malts add bread, toffee and caramel flavors. This is our chance to explore the interplay of grain.
