French novelists Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet were commissioned to write the scripts for Hiroshima and Marienbad respectively. In turn, we are delighted to be collaborating with the White Whale Bookstore in presenting these films. White Whale Bookstore - a wonderful bookstore at 4574 Liberty Avenue with a diverse selection of new and used books - will be at Row House Cinema Thurday evening (11/10) from around 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm with a sample selection of books and information about their new store.

About the films:
Commissioned to make a documentary on the atomic bomb, Resnais proposed an alternative: a fictional feature film to be written by novelist Marguerite Duras. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), in which Emmanuèle Riva’s tortured memories of a tragic wartime romance with a German soldier are intercut with her present day affair with Japanese architect Eiji Okada, proved a worldwide, award-winning box office hit. Resnais’ follow-up film, Last Year at Marienbad (1961), was, if anything, even more talked about. Written by novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet, it's a surrealistic portrayal of a romantic encounter between a man and a married woman whose affair may or may not have begun the previous year.
