Five alcohol-free alternatives for Manchester freshers

Five alcohol-free alternatives for Manchester freshers

With every September comes a new influx of university students from across the globe, and with this tidal wave of teenagers the infamous fresher events take up the first weeks of everyone's calendars. Notoriously fresher events usually involve a shed load of alcohol but what if you just don't fancy a heavy night? Here's a quick round up of things you can do in and around Manchester which don't involve a few shots of vodka. Trapped Up North The first in our line up and the newest to grace our streets, 'Trapped Up North' is the new interactive and immersive horror escape room experience situated in Manchester's Great Northern Warehouse just off Deansgate. The concept is very simple: get out of the locked room within one hour. With three rooms to choose from and teams of up to six escapees you're bound to have fun. Just make sure to wear clothes and shoes that you can move around easily in and don't mind getting potentially scuffed. Not recommended for freshers who suffer with claustrophobia. Jump Nation Imagine a warehouse sized room crammed wall to wall with trampolines (139 to be exact), if that wasn't what your daydreams were filled of when you were seven years old I don't know what was. Arguably the most energetic of the list, Jump Nation welcomes up to 99 people at a time to bounce around to their heart's content at any given time and with referees on hand there shouldn't be any trouble. Their facilities are open to people of all ages and have been popular with chil

Manchester's nightlife is nothing short of legendary and there is something to cater to all - from cheap-as-chips student nights, to swanky clubs, to rock bars. Clubbing isn't just reserved for the weekend with a variety of club nights taking place throughout the week so here's a look at just some of them. Monday: Fifth Avenue Fifth Avenue Fifth Avenue proclaims itself to be 'Manchester's number one indie experience' and in its own right it's a clubbing landmark in Manchester's strobe light-lit nightlife scene. The club consists of a giant dance floor space, balconies, state of the art lighting and sound and best of all, cheap drinks. The student friendliness of the club means that there's never a quiet night. Watch out for the slippery floors, the liveliness of the place makes for a lot of drink spilling. Tuesday: Satan's Hollow Satan's Hollow If you couldn't quite grasp by the name, Satan's Hollow is one of Manchester's few clubs aimed at punk, rock and meta

The women who made Manchester great

The women who made Manchester great

Did you know that Manchester city centre has only one out of its many, many statues representing a woman? That's right. Queen Victoria at Piccadilly Gardens is our only woman to be immortalised in this way, something which the WOManchester campaign has set out to rectify. This week the shortlist of potential new statues of Manchester's great women was unveiled and obviously consists of amazing women, all. With Manchester known for being a city of innovators and pioneers, and with any number of notable residents making a difference in the world, here's our own look at seven of the women who've made significant contributions to the history of our city and beyond. Eight of the most popular pub names in Manchester

Eight of the most popular pub names in Manchester

It is strongly believed that the English's love of pubs is something that makes Britain so great. But did you know that if you own or are leasing a pub and fancy changing the name, you can't actually change it to anything you want? It explains why we see so many pubs with 'The Railway' stamped above the door; there's a grand total of 15 in Greater Manchester alone. Today most us of take pub names at face value unless we stumble across a completely ridiculous name. However, most pub names have an origin story from back in the day. Last time someone checked there were around 600 Red Lions laced up and down the country, but has anyone actually seen a red lion? Manchester's most popular pub name: 'The Railway'http://levyboy.com/around_town.htm With this in mind, here are the most popular pub names in Greater Manchester: The Railway – As we are home to the world's first passenger railway it isn't surprising that it's Manchester's most popular name. It's also a handy place to escape to when the obligatory delays roll in. The White Lion – The lion is often used as a sign for royalty. The white lion however is used in
