Growing up, I was lucky enough to ski in some of Europe’s most sought-after resorts, places like St Anton, Saalbach, and Chamonix, the latter being a particularly popular family favourite. Driving to the Alps afforded us the luxury of packing up our skis and seeing what else was nearby, and I’ve found that some of the most underrated resorts are often just around the corner, offering fabulous skiing without the premium price tags (or the crowds). Of course, you don’t always have to look in the shadow of the Alps to find something special. From the mountains of Montenegro and Bulgaria to the unexpected slopes of southern Italy and Spain, there’s plenty of fun to be had in places that rarely make the usual shortlist. The best ski resort in Europe? That’s a tricky one, and anyone who tells you otherwise probably has a favourite they’re trying to promote. Ultimately, it all depends on what you’re after, whether that’s perfectly groomed pistes, ludicrously long runs, spectacular scenery, or simply somewhere that won’t require a second mortgage to get through the week. I’ve skied enough to know that no two resorts are quite the same, and the best ones always offer something beyond the slopes. Europe has an almost ridiculous number of ski resorts, so deciding on a “best” is a nigh-on impossible task. Still, doesn’t hurt to try, right?
