The best pet stores in Los Angeles

The best pet stores in Los Angeles

As everyone who either visits or lives in Los Angeles already knows, we are an extremely pet-friendly metropolis; from the many mountains and beaches to the numerous parks, there is no shortage of fun for you and your furry friend. Whatever activity unfolds for you and your pet, it pays to be prepared. There are hundreds of pet stores in LA, but finding one that will fit your dog’s exact needs can be a daunting task. (We say dog because most of these shops cater to Fido over Fluffy, though there are cat accoutrements to be found as well.) We and our four-legged research assistants found eight shops that stand out from the rest in terms of variety, atmosphere and customer service. Read on and pamper your pets!

Lazy Dog Café

Lazy Dog Café

If you and your pet are on the road and you’re both feeling a bit peckish, The Lazy Dog Café boasts 12 locations in Los Angeles and Orange County, with additional restaurants in San Diego, Concord and Las Vegas. The Lazy Dog obtained its name and concept from owner Chris Simms, who, while vacationing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, saw a dog lying by a fireplace and thought, "I wish everyone could enjoy life as much as that lazy dog by the fire." Playful and relaxing touches inspired by man’s best friend include a 3D paw print on the ceiling plus dog photos and paintings throughout the restaurant. A dog-friendly patio and tasty menu items for your pup include chicken, hamburger and brown rice.

The Waffle

The Waffle

This retro-inspired Hollywood eatery known for its signature waffles opened in 2008 and quickly became a local favorite. Owners Gavin Polone and John Papsidera are big dog lovers, and The Waffle’s atmosphere is reflective of that; the restaurant’s dog-friendly staff will not only bring water for your four-legged friend, but special treats called Woofles made with parmesan, parsley and whole wheat flour are also available. The Waffle also gives back to the community by working with the SPCA LA and other animal rights organizations.

Park Bench Café

Park Bench Café

Park Bench Cafe, located in Huntington Beach Central Park, hits all the requisite marks as a dog lover's paradise. The restaurant has been a brunch spot staple since 1988, but it’s the Park Bench's doggie menu that gets the most attention. Items with adorable names like Bow-Wow-Wow (boneless, skinless chicken) and Rover Easy (scrambled eggs) are featured, as are decadent desserts including Chilly Paws (vanilla ice cream) and Peanut Butter Churro Bites. Does your dog have an upcoming birthday? Your furry friend can have a "poochie party" during which six or more canine partygoers will get fresh bowls of water, an entrée from the special menu, dessert and a piece of dog-friendly birthday cake.
