Tea and Antique’s authentic Chinese food and tea ceremonies now in Sandton

Tea and Antique’s authentic Chinese food and tea ceremonies now in Sandton

Tea and Antique, known for its authentic Chinese home-style cuisine, opened in Bedfordview in December 2022. This month, they’ve opened their second branch in Parkmore, Sandton, after a whole lot of pleading from loyal Sandtonite customers who wanted something closer to home.  The husband-and-wife team, Jonsen Wang and NiNi Zhao moved to South Africa from China. Jonsen ran an antique shop in Qingdao, Shandong, and you’ll see his influence in the beautiful antique decor scattered through both restaurants – ornate wooden cabinets filled with delicate sculptures and fine pottery.  NiNi is from Xi’an, Shaanxi, a city that served as a capital for thirteen dynasties over three millennia. “We opened Tea and Antique hoping to create a 'window to China' — a place where people can experience real Chinese food and culture,” NiNi says. “For some, it’s a taste of something new. For others, it’s a way to relive their travels to China.” Tea and Antique specialise in traditional home-style Chinese cuisine. Don’t expect pretty plating. The focus is hearty portions and dishes that taste like home for NiNi and Jonsen, with the occasional twist. One of their most popular dishes is the stewed oxtail rice, slow-cooked to fall off the bone but completely different in flavour compared to classic South African oxtail. When I asked Jonsen what spices he uses, he laughed. “Eighteen different ones! Oxtail isn’t commonly eaten in China, but it’s my favourite meat here in South Africa. I like it, so it’s
A true taste of Naples in Rosebank with Napz Pizzeria Napoletana

A true taste of Naples in Rosebank with Napz Pizzeria Napoletana

Open for lunch and dinner between 12h00 and 20h30, Napz offers both dine-in options as well as Uber Eats deliveries – that is, until they sell out each day. It’s a perfect spot for a family lunch, a casual early date night, or an unforgettable event. Napz isn’t just another pizza joint. They serve vera pizza Napoletana, meaning ‘authentic Neopolitan pizza’. The owner, Enrico Adinolfi, trained in Naples at the AVPN (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana) and ensures that Napz only uses imported Italian ingredients of the highest calibre.  Family-owned and run, Enrico and Viviana are the husband-and-wife duo that make the magic happen, though you’re likely to see their son, Maximus, playing somewhere in the restaurant too. Their families hail from a town in southern Italy, Cava de' Tirreni, an hour from Naples.  “Our Italian heritage brings that understanding and that connection to Italy in what we do. We understand what a Neapolitan pizza is. We've trained in it. We've been certified in it, and the staff have been trained [by me] in the exact same training from Naples,” Enrico says. “We use techniques that have been passed down generation by generation from the pizzerias in Naples, which the AVPN safeguards.”  Tayla Blaire The AVPN process includes strict guidelines on how to make an authentic Neopolitan pizza, from the flour to the dough-making to the ingredient selection. Turns out vera pizza-making is vera (ha) serious business. If you want some light entertainment, just g
Spier Hotel’s luxe glow-up is worth extending your stay for

Spier Hotel’s luxe glow-up is worth extending your stay for

Founded in 1692, all South Africans know Spier, usually thanks to the bottle of wine you take to your friends. For those who’ve visited in the last decade or so, the association is likely the conferencing element, the cheetah encounter experience or the birds of prey. None of those are available anymore (except good wine, still plenty of that) as Spier embraces a revamp that, frankly, feels more like a rebirth.  The vibe is country but classic  The new hotel resembles nothing of its former conferencing fame. Their 155 rooms were transformed into a boutique hotel with 80 rooms. The hotel is more of a retreat with endemic flora along paths that connect the various Cape terraced buildings. Every room and suite has a scenic view, whether it’s the river, the gardens or the mountains.  If you’re looking for a space to touch grass, this is it. From using plants propagated on the farm to the repurposing of tables and lamp bases from the previous furnishings, the carbon impact of the revamp was carefully considered. Rooms exude effortless elegance with simplistic design. Luxurious touches feel like home, but better: think Karoo wool carpets, solid oak floors and silk linen and cotton textures. Spier The details make the difference I usually leave minibars as I find them. Not here. They’re crammed with Spier’s award-winning wines, beers, soft drinks, iced tea and all the good stuff: white chocolate honeycomb, salted caramel marshmallow bars, roasted nuts and biltong - all included in
