BACKGROUND

California was admitted as a state on September 9, 1850 as the result of a deal struck in Washington where the south agreed to admit California as a free state in exchange for the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act (which required northerners to return escaped slaves to their masters in the south), and for the expansion of slavery into the Utah and New Mexico territories.

Unlike the people of most other territories controlled by the United States, the people of California never had the chance to hold a referendum on joining the Union. The decision was made for them by Washington and American settlers who arrived in California while it was under U.S. military governance were those who drafted a constitution for California to begin the application process to become a U.S. state.

Join us on September 9 as we protest the circumstances under which California was conquered and subsequently made into a U.S. state and as we rally for independence from the United States which we intend to achieve by first putting an independence referendum on the 2020 ballot.
