Save the Date: Mental Health Matters Day 2016
By: Zima Creason, CEO, Mental Health America of California*

Mark your calendars for May 24 as hundreds of people will gather in Sacramento on the West Steps of the Capitol building for Mental Health Matters Day 2016: Awareness. Action. Change.

The coalition that has come together to plan and host this very special day believes passionately in the power of awareness, action and change to better the lives of people with mental health challenges. Speaking up about mental health is an essential part of battling stigma, and our voices are amplified when we speak up together. By hosting Mental Health Matters Day, we continue to strengthen our community and the movement towards ending stigma.

We have some exciting speakers and entertainment booked including Scott Budnick, founder and president of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition and executive producer of “The Hangover” movie series and Yashi Brown, a poet/spoken word artist and mental health advocate who has lived with bipolar disorder and author of “Black Daisy in a White Limousine: 77 Poems.” Our event emcee will be Paul Gilmartin, former TV host of TBS’ “Dinner and a Movie,” stand-up comedian (Comedy Central Presents) and host of the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast.

Also, be sure to bring your picnic gear (folding chairs, blankets, etc.) and stay for our food truck party following the speaking program. We will have DJ Anointed opening the event and DJ Joseph One closing out our day.
