Time Out says

Hosted brunch for Patron-level Members and above > 9:30–11 AM On the occasion of the exhibition Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui, which will be on view at our downtown campus, the Museum of Contemporary Art and The San Diego Museum of Art invite you to the 15th annual Axline Lecture to celebrate the magnificent work of El Anatsui. El Anatsui is an internationally renowned artist best known for transforming simple materials into complex assemblages that create distinctive visual impact. Roberta Smith of The New York Timeswrites “…the works evoke lace but also chain mail; quilts but also animal hides; garments but also mosaic, not to mention the rich ceremonial cloths of numerous cultures. Their drapes and folds have a voluptuous sculptural presence, but also an undeniably glamorous bravado.” This event honors Jackie and Rea Axline, whose generosity and philanthropic leadership inspired endowments to both museums in 1999. Beginning at 9:30 AM, MCASD Members at the Patron level and above, and special guests of The San Diego Museum of Art, are invited to a hosted brunch in Axline Court. The lecture will then begin promptly at 11 AM in Sherwood Auditorium. MCASD Patron level Members and above may RSVP for the hosted brunch by emailing RSVP@mcasd.org or calling 858 454 3541 x120 by February 27. Those who RSVP for the brunch can pick up their lecture tickets at the front door. Tickets are $5 for Members, and $10 for non-members. Please note, this lecture is anticipated to sell out. Unclaimed tickets will be released for sale to the general public at 11:10 AM.
