Art In The Evening Derrick Cartwright says
"Bringing Bruegel to Balboa Park: The Putnam Sisters and Collecting for the City of San Diego"

This talk will consider the history of Pieter Bruegel's great oil painting, Parable of the Sower, which has been a favorite within this community and among scholars of Netherlandish painting alike. How did this painting come to be in San Diego? Where does it fit into the collecting priorities of the famously private Putnam sisters? As a key part of the recently re-installed Dutch/Flemish Galleries at the Timken, this work merits new reflection and full contextualization.

This presentation is part of Blessed Beasts and Curious Creatures: Animal Processionals from the 13th to the 21st Centuries exhibition at the Timken on view September 23 - December 11, 2016.

Guest Speaker: Derrick R. Cartwright, Curatorial Director, Timken Museum of Art and Director of University Galleries and Professor of Practice at USD
