The event creator says
"Dark Paradise" is an experimental arrangement of traditional Balinese gamelan repertoire fitting a narrative of romanticizing darkness as processes of refinement. An all-star cast of performers intertwine for a night of Balinese gamelan overlooking beautiful La Jolla shores. This particular gamelan collective is led by I Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena and is comprised of members from Gamelan Tunas Mekar (Denver, Colorado) and Gamelan Burat Wangi (CalArts/Santa Clarita, California). Classic pieces chosen to specifically to push the body and re-think time include: "Ujan Mas" (Golden rain), "Teruna Jaya" (Victorious Youth) and "Jauk Manis" (Sweet temple guardian of the forest) are arranged to portray a story of struggles within one's expectations and personal ideology. Joined by renowned master gamelan teachers and dancers, Bapak I Made Lasmawan, Ibu Ketut Marni, and Bapak I Nyoman Wenten, the ensemble/collective performs in San Diego for a one time performance of "experimental through traditional" work.

Come for a one time performance of this clash and enjoy an evening of the fiery and flashy, gamelan gong kebyar which was last performed in San Diego in 2006. This performance will also be part of a send off for Putu as he will depart from San Diego to do his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
