La Jolla Playhouse says
The San Diego Center for Jewish Culture (CJC) and La Jolla Playhouse are hosting a special staged reading of iconic Yiddish playwright Sholem Asch's controversial drama, GOD OF VENGEANCE, in conjunction with the Playhouse’s world-premiere production of INDECENT.

Still controversial nearly a century after it debuted, GOD OF VENGEANCE tells the story of a brothel owner who tries to strike a deal with God to protect his daughter’s innocence. Completed in 1907 and making its English-language debut in 1922, GOD OF VENGEANCE was the first-ever drama on Broadway to feature a lesbian love scene. The cast was promptly arrested and charged with obscenity, despite the fact that the play was highly esteemed in Europe and had been translated into German, Russian, Polish, Hebrew, Italian, Czech and Norwegian.

Asch's work serves as the basis for Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel's world-premiere play with music, INDECENT, directed by Rebecca Taichman, running November 13 – December 10 at La Jolla Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Theatre. Alive with popular songs of the era, this deeply moving piece charts the history of Asch’s incendiary work, the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it, and the evolving identity of the culturally-rich community that inspired its creation.

Directed by D. Candis Paule, the reading is presented in collaboration with the Center for Jewish Culture’s Straight from the Page program, a staged reading series featuring new work and classic plays brought to life by professional actors. The reading will be followed by a talkback moderated by La Jolla Playhouse Resident Dramaturg Shirley Fishman.
