May is Maritime Month, a time for us to learn about the tremendous impact the maritime industry has on our region and to celebrate the people who make it happen. San Diego Bay’s working waterfront is a critical component of the region’s past, present and future success. The maritime industry helps generate billions of dollars in economic impact both along the bayfront and throughout the region.

Maritime includes the cargo and cruise ship business of the Port, along with private industry dependent on the water such as shipbuilding and repair and commercial fishing. These businesses play a significant role in making the San Diego region the thriving area it is today.

Our region is fortunate to have this unique industry due to our ideal location and deep water harbor perfect for ships. Ships bring bananas and building materials, passengers and parts, cars and careers - in short, ships bring prosperity.
