Press Art To Continue: New Works By Mr. Benja says

In collaboration with Subterranean Coffee Boutique in North Park, Thumbprint Gallery is pleased to present Press Art to Continue, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Mr. Benja. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 20th (5-10pm) during the 21st Annual North Park Festival of Arts (11am-10pm).

“Press Art To Continue” is the first formal debut of Mr Benja’s pixelated paintings of pop iconography, which he calls his “BenjaPixels”. These images are immediately reminiscent of early video game visuals and use a new technique to force the viewer to recognize hand-crafted recreations of computer-crafted symbols

In the show, Mr Benja will be continuing his overall theme that “Life Imitates Game” by exploring juxtapositions between real life collaged media and digital entertainment.

“For a long time, I resisted the use of the retro, pixelated images because they were trendy and kitsch. But now the public conscious is far enough away from those creations that I can properly magnify the small, iconic images into representations of larger ideas. Besides, they’re fun to paint. :)” - Mr. Benja

Mr Benja’s art has developed from over a decade of working in the video game industry and a lifetime of witnessing the influence of electronic entertainment on our media and social landscape. His paintings were a direct response to the stresses he experienced in the real and video game worlds. He formally entered the art world in San Diego in 2011 and currently lives and works in Long Beach Area.
