UC San Diego Extension says
Level: Middle School (Grades 6th- 8th)

The ocean is host to many different ecosystems – from the tide pools that grace our shorelines to areas far off, in the middle of the Pacific. What’s life like for the animals that dwell in these ecosystems, and how do marine biologists go about doing research in these areas?

Students get to virtually "come aboard" a few science expeditions as we look at remote areas, including Deep Sea Ecosystems like the Mariana Trench, to learn about the bizarre creatures that dwell in the abyss and beyond, as well as California’s own kelp forest ecosystems, where sea lions, dolphins, and whales frolic just offshore. We look at human-caused effects on these ecosystems, including a peek into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with interactives activities and experiments that explore how plastics move around our oceans.

Learning comes to life as each student creates their own handcrafted marine creatures or scenes inspired by their virtual ocean adventures to take home with them. Crafts are finished with a magnet for fun and easy display.
