San Diego Art Institute says
The San Diego Art Institute is pleased to present a month-long series of Halloween-themed programming in celebration of two concurrent exhibitions: “The Dead Are Not Quiet: A Group Exhibition of Macabre Art” and “The Haunted Art of T. Jefferson Carey”. Programs range from lectures, weekly video screenings and readings, SDAI’s annual “Monster Drawing Rally”, an all-ages pumpkin carving, a costume party for humans, as well as a dog costume contest judging with prizes. The opening receptions for "The Dead Are Not Quiet" and "The Haunted Art of T. Jefferson Carey" will take place at the San Diego Art Institute, 1439 El Prado in Balboa Park on Saturday, October 1 from 6pm-8pm. The exhibitions will run until Sunday, November 6, 2016.

“The Haunted Art of T. Jefferson Carey” showcases thirty years of Carey’s work in the most theatrical, dramatic, and comprehensive way, exhibiting many of the qualities of a haunted house, including a black light installation created expressly for the exhibition. The term “haunted art” derives from work created especially for a commercial haunted house—it is generally executed quickly, with a certain roughness, and depicts horrible creatures, in strange and bizarre situations. It evokes a powerful emotion, be it happy, sad, or terrified. T. Jefferson Carey has produced plays throughout the United States and London, as well as several animated films, which will be screened at SDAI during the course of the exhibition. He has done art design, scenic design, performance art, and has taught acting and playwriting. He holds a BFA from New York University and an MFA from the National Theatre Conservatory.

“The Dead Are Not Quiet: A Group Exhibition of Macabre Art” features work by artists living and working in the Southern California/Baja Norte region selected through an open call. The judge for the work was Scott Mitchell Putesky, an artist and musician best known for his work as the guitarist and co-founder of the musical group Marilyn Manson. Artists in “The Dead Are Not Quiet” will be announced by September 10, 2016; the exhibition will run concurrently with “The Haunted Art of T. Jefferson Carey”.

Exhibiting Artists in "The Dead Are Not Quiet" are: Addison Stonestreet, Alex Ingram, Alison Chen & Michael Covello, Anne Pelej, Cayce Wheelock, Clayton Llewellyn, Dakota Noot, Dan Adams, Daniel Corona, David Russell Talbott, Emily Hastings, Eric Potts, Garrett Wear, Hannah Johansen, Hugh Schock, Ivy Guild, Janice Grinsell, Jenya Armen, John Purlia, John Straub, Julia Oldham, Karim Shuquem, Kurosh Yahyai, Larry Caveney, Liza Hennessey Botkin, Lucas Novak, Maidy Morhous, Michelle Mueller + Erik Mueller, Natalie Meredith, Nathaniel Clark, Nina Isabelle, PANCA, Paul Koester, Philip Petrie, Rita Miglioli, Robin Spalding, Shahla Rose, Sheena Rae Dowling, Wick Alexander, and Yvette Janine Jackson.
