Time Out says
Opening: Saturday, February 14th 6-9pm
Kendra Exposed, a solo exhibition by New York based artist Cindy Hinant investigates female celebrity in contemporary pop culture. This exhibition confronts high-circulation media images with contemporary feminism by appropriating recordings and images of Kim Kardashian, Kendra Wilkinson, and Paris Hilton.
In reworking sex tapes and paparazzi photos, the artist imposes a color field coding to each celebrity. The reception of the original media slows down, and in relieving it of its franticness, Hinant manages to subtly reveal a circular game of discipline and transgression, where it is unclear if these celebrities fall prey to, or take advantage of a media culture that is exploitative of women. The focal point in this work is this ambiguity. Kendra Exposed offers a strident critique of how we are taught to think about sex, consumption, and victimization.
