OPENING IN OUR MAIN GALLERY:

TRAVIS LOUIE, 'ARCHIVE OF LOST SPECIES'

Travis Louie returns to Roq La Rue with ‘Archive of Lost Species’, a collection of works featuring his signature host of fantastical characters. His work is highly influenced by Victorian and Edwardian oddities and portraiture, and he often refers to his style as a kind of cryptozoology. Informed by the stories he writes, his characters inhabit a world shared with other strange creatures, mythological figures, and extinct or exaggerated versions of animals we know. Each has their own unique folklore, but they are connected through the relationships that unfold thorough Louis’ tales, their intricate histories and societies revealed through a window into an alternate past.

LAUREN MARX, 'AMERICAN WILDERNESS'

We are excited to bring St. Louis artist Lauren Marx to Roq La Rue for ‘American Wilderness’! Marx’s intricately drawn detailed portrayal of flora and fauna are reminiscent of old scientific anatomical or botanical text illustrations. For her, they are a kind of creation myth, where the animals form nebulae, birds are the stars, and insects are the dust which come together in a swirling Baroque metaphor of our phenomenal universe. Wavering the line between grotesque and sublime, her flayed and fecund imagery is lush with a blooming, flowering presence in the place of death and decay; forming intensely beautiful compositions that remind us of the fleeting, flowing nature of all life in the cosmos.

OPENING IN THE LOFT GALLERY: PRINT SHOW

Roq La Rue will feature rare and limited edition prints from the depths of our archives by John Brophy, Femke Hiemstra, Camille Rose Garcia, Ray Caesar, Natalie Shau, Nicoletta Ceccoli, and more.
