A number of studies–including one by UW’s Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation— show a direct correlation between individual health and a person’s wealth. According to epidemiologist Michael Marmot (The Status Syndrome), social status and education also play a significant role in overall wellness. The Health Gap analyzes the intersection of health and poverty in a handful of nations including the United States, Cuba, Canada, Brazil, and others, with the conclusion that, despite modern social policies and technological advances, those with less have worse health. Marmot, President of the World Medical Assembly, will share his research on this complex topic and highlight the areas ripe for improvement–child development, education, employment, and elderly care.
