Piecing it Together: New Work by Jessica Bonin
July 14th - August 7th, 2016
Artist Reception Thursday, July 14th 5-9pm during
Capitol Hill Art Walk

During the Victorian Era, it was common to keep a family scrap album where the bits of paper and ephemera collected each day could be collaged onto its thick pages. At the same time, a growing fascination with the natural world led people to incorporate dried plant specimens into their albums. From this ritual of documenting everyday life arose the Victorian die-cut, made specifically for scrapbooking, featuring the popular aesthetic themes of the time.

In “Piecing it Together,” Jessica Bonin explores the idea of memory through collected ephemera and symbolism. How does one visually summarise a life event in a concise image? Referencing the aesthetic of the die-cut with cut paper assemblages which are then floated in antique frames, Bonin's work exudes a romantic nostalgia for the past with images that are cathartically autobiographical.

Jessica Bonin is an artist, musician and curator from Seattle, WA. She is a member of PUNCH Gallery, co-founder of the Lucky Dumpster in Edison, WA, and is current curator/proprietor of Good Neighbor Gallery in Seattle.
