Arctic Alaska is the subject of tonight’s talk as preservationist Ray Bane, the subject and co-author with Kaylene Johnson-Sullivan of the book, Our Perfect Wild: Ray and Barbara Bane’s Journeys and the Fate of the Far North (University of Alaska Press), appears on our stage. During the 1960s, Ray and Barbara Bane worked as teachers of Inupiat and Koyukon children in Alaska, and in doing so learned much about how critical wilderness was to the ancient traditions of the people. The Banes eventually gave up teaching to work to preserve Alaska’s wilderness through the National Parks Service.
