Where to rest after a full day exploring the best of South African art in Makhanda.

It’s that time of year again, when local talent, from theatre, dance, music, poetry, visual art, magic, comedy, and more, takes centre stage at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, sponsored by Standard Bank.
From 25 June to 5 July, this 11-day event draws thousands of locals and visitors to the Eastern Cape for a celebration of the arts. While the festival recommends spending at least three days to experience as much as possible, the festival is jam-packed with events you won’t want to miss.
Whether you’re travelling from Cape Town, Durban, or Johannesburg, we’ve rounded up the best places to stay in and around Makhanda to make the most of your visit.
Formerly known as Grahamstown, this quaint city has been home to the National Arts Festival for over 50 years.
The Graham Hotel, located in the heart of the city, offers modern accommodation and is in close proximity to the Graham Mall. Rates start from R2,354 per night which includes breakfast.
There is no shortage of Airbnb options during your stay. And with the city’s streets, theatres, halls and open spaces coming alive with creativity throughout the festival, you’re likely to find activities and performances no matter where you choose to stay.
Airbnb: From R2,859 for five nights. Book here.
Located roughly 130 km from Makhanda, the Eastern Cape’s largest city is a family-friendly coastal destination that offers a well-balanced mix of beachfront, iconic landmarks such as the pier in Summerstrand, and quieter suburbs like Walmer.
Known as the Friendly City (and as a GQ native, I can attest to this), there’s no shortage of warm hospitality, whether you’re staying in a hotel or Airbnb.
If luxury is what you're after, I can personally recommend the Boardwalk Hotel in Summerstrand. Think indoor heated pool, a spa, a casino, and more.
For those seeking ocean views at a more affordable price point, The Beach Hotel is a solid option.
I’ve also stayed here myself, and while it offers a more intimate, boutique-style experience with fewer rooms – and carpet, lots of it – the service is by no means lacking.
Time Out Tip: The Beach Hotel frequently runs specials, so it’s worth checking its website before booking.
Apart from the views, an additional advantage of staying in Summerstrand is its proximity to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport, which is roughly 5km away.
When it comes to Airbnbs, there are plenty of options available across the city.
Airbnb: From R2,602 for five nights. Book here.
A bit farther from Makhanda – just over a two-hour drive – KuGompo City is known for its rich amaXhosa cultural heritage.
If you’re flying in from Durban, Cape Town or Johannesburg, you can land at King Phalo Airport, about 1 hour and 55 minutes by road from Makhanda.
For accommodation, the Garden Court East London hotel starts from R1,755 per night for a standard room.
Airbnb: From R2,571 for five nights. Book here.
