Much like the city itself, Visby’s hotels are packed with character, history and a touch of magic. This small medieval town, with its cobbled lanes and rose-covered facades, offers hotel experiences that are hard to find anywhere else. You can wake up inside Visby’s ring wall, quite literally in the heart of history, or look out over the Baltic Sea and take in captivating sunsets that wash the entire panorama in colour.

You can opt for a charming stay in the heart of the old Hanseatic town, where historic buildings meet modern comfort, or find peace on the outskirts of Visby with the sea as your nearest neighbour. Or why not go for an apartment hotel with an outdoor pool for laid-back moments.

These are hotels we’d recommend to friends – and where we’d happily check in for a weekend when we want to experience Visby, all year round. The list includes beloved classics inside the ring wall and interesting gems just outside, family-run hotels, stylish boutique options and comfortable stays with a pleasing price tag.

In short, these are the best hotels in Visby.

Best hotels in Visby, Gotland

Kalk Hotel

Kalk Hotel is like a modern city hotel, just set in the middle of a charming small town steeped in history. Step outside and you’re straight into Visby’s medieval atmosphere, while inside you’re surrounded by comfort and design-led interiors.

This stylish boutique hotel has 21 rooms, each individually designed with a Nordic aesthetic. The look is fairly pared-back, yet warm. Think light colours, clean lines and carefully chosen materials such as Gotland limestone. The overall experience feels harmonious, with every detail thoughtfully considered without ever feeling stiff. Kalk Hotel is, quite simply, a perfectly sized stay where modern meets historic.

The location is also fantastic: right in the city centre, among cobbled streets and restaurants. Just outside the hotel entrance, a gateway in Visby’s ring wall leads out to the well-known Almedalen park (which hosts Sweden’s major annual political forum) and the sea just below. Central, yet with a calm, almost tucked-away feel.

When you wake up, there’s something to look forward to. At Kalk Hotel, breakfast is taken seriously – it’s often mentioned as one of the best in Visby. Expect carefully selected ingredients, plenty of homemade touches and a clear focus on sustainability. Freshly toasted granola, homemade bread, Gotland honey, berries from the island when in season… it all adds up to a relaxed and flavourful start to the day. And if the weather’s on your side, you might prefer to take it outdoors. The hotel can arrange takeaway breakfast so you can enjoy your morning in the green lawns of Almedalen or down by the sea.

Time Out tip: Fancy treating yourself? Some rooms come with a private balcony, where views over the sea and the classic setting of Almedalen add a welcome touch of luxury.

Address: Strandgatan 13

Expect to pay: from SEK 1700-5500 per night for two people, including breakfast

Hotel Helgeand Wisby

Forget classic hotel chains with predictable rooms and perfectly symmetrical layouts. Check in at Hotel Helgeand Wisby and you’re met with a main building dating back to the 13th century, where thick stone walls, slanted angles and solid wood create an instant sense of calm. The hotel sits right in the city centre, next door to St Mary’s Cathedral and just a few minutes’ walk from Stora Torget. It’s hard to get closer to the medieval heart of Visby than this.

Step out into the courtyard and another pleasant surprise awaits. The hotel boasts one of the larger courtyards in the old town, where a leafy garden and the Helgeand ruin provide shade and tranquillity. In summer, it’s the perfect spot to settle in with breakfast or simply enjoy a coffee in peaceful surroundings.

The hotel is family-run and has around 20 rooms, all offering modern comforts with clear historical touches. Guests often praise the breakfast, which features homemade bread, house granola and local ingredients such as jams and marmalades made from Gotland berries. Homely is probably the word.

Staying here feels a bit like a gentle history lesson. Medieval Visby – but with modern comforts and an unusually peaceful atmosphere right in the middle of the city.

Time Out tip: Bringing your four-legged companion? Hotel Helgeand Wisby offers dedicated dog-friendly rooms.

Villa Alma

Location, location, location. Trendy Villa Alma sits among the greenery, with the ocean on one side and the iconic Almedalen park on the other. The hotel stands out with its chic, colourful interiors where floral details run like a signature throughout, set right by the gentle waves of the Baltic Sea. Just moments from Visby harbour and with the ring wall as its closest neighbour, the location feels effortlessly exclusive.

From Villa Alma, everything worth exploring in the old town is within easy walking distance. You can stroll, cycle or even go for a run along the promenade heading north by the ring wall. It’s the best of both worlds: close to all the buzz, yet surrounded by calm.

Inside, this boutique hotel offers a stylish, contemporary setting, from the interiors to the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Many rooms also come with a real highlight: sea views. Sunsets here, with a deep red sun meeting the water, are not to be missed.

Its standout breakfast and easy elegance suit everything from romantic weekends to work trips on Gotland. With just 21 rooms, it’s best to book well ahead.

If you’re visiting in summer, don’t miss the restaurant with Asian influences and its beautiful terrace.

Time Out tip: When booking a room at Villa Alma, you can choose views of the sea, the beautiful Almedalen, or both.

Expect to pay: From SEK 3,500-5,500 per night, or up to SEK 7,000 during peak weeks

Hotell S:t Clemens

Hands up if you’ve ever had your hotel breakfast in a medieval ruin. It’s hard to beat. And quietly magical. But that’s exactly what you can do at the small, family-run and welcoming Hotell S:t Clemens, a slightly tucked-away gem in Visby’s old town. You can enjoy your breakfast, or simply a coffee, right inside the ruin in the hotel’s own garden.

You don’t stay here for glitz and luxury. Instead, this intimate, authentic hotel feels very much like ‘real Visby’, with cobblestones in the courtyard and five separate buildings adding to the charm. The oldest parts date back to the 17th century, and no two of the 30 rooms are alike. Expect slanted angles, varied interiors and a mix of colours. It feels more like staying in someone’s home or a cosy guesthouse than checking into a hotel, though the standard is still very much hotel-level.

At the top, there’s a suite where sea views and a private sauna make for something extra special. But most guests come to S:t Clemens for its relaxed style and great value.

When you wake up and head for breakfast, you’ll find treats with a strong local touch – like honey from the hotel’s own beehives. Sustainability and a close connection to Gotland run through the whole experience.

Time Out tip: Fancy helping a herring? If you choose to skip housekeeping for a day, the hotel donates to water projects that protect fish and the environment.

Address: Smedjegatan 3

Expect to pay: Around SEK 2,500-3,800 per night (prices peak in July and during major event weeks)

Novi Resort

Is it really Visby? Yes. But with a touch of the Mediterranean. It almost feels like you’re abroad, yet it’s unmistakably Gotland, with the Baltic Sea stretching out just in front of the resort. Novi Resort is larger than many hotels in Visby, but despite its international resort feel, it still manages to keep a relaxed atmosphere. You can stay in hotel rooms, suites or bungalows of various sizes, often with private terraces and, in many cases, sea views. The interiors vary from one bungalow to another, as they are privately owned and rented out, which gives a more personal feel than a traditional hotel.

Novi is located about 1.5 kilometres north of Visby’s old town. Norderstrand just below the resort has a small sandy beach, though most swims happen from the jetty. A larger sandy beach can be found two kilometres further north, at Snäck.

Along the beach and at several spots along the promenade, you’ll find barbecue areas and benches inviting you to linger.

On-site, Novi offers everything from a heated outdoor pool and gym to restaurants, bars and a popular beach club open during summer. If you’re after easy access to Visby combined with just the right amount of buzz, along with poolside lounging, sea swims and long dinners at sunset, this could be the perfect fit. You really do get two worlds in one stay: Visby’s history just around the corner and a laid-back seaside escape right outside your door.

Time Out tipTake a morning or evening stroll along Visby’s long seaside promenade, which stretches from Almedalen to Snäckgärdsbaden, four kilometres to the north.

Address: S:t Göransgatan 31

Expect to pay: Around SEK 4,000-6,500 per night during peak season (often significantly more for larger bungalows or sea-view suites)

Visby Apartment Hotel / Kolgården

The accommodation consists of fully equipped apartments with your own kitchen, bathroom and combined living and sleeping area. Each unit sleeps two to four people, making it ideal for families or groups of friends who appreciate the flexibility of cooking their own meals – especially if you’d rather not spend most of your travel budget on dining out.

It’s rarely the loudest place that’s the most interesting. That’s certainly true here. How about a laid-back apartment stay with a hotel feel and a pool just around the corner – all at a pretty appealing price point.

Visby Apartment Hotel, also known as Kolgården, is a relaxed apartment-style stay just outside Visby’s ring wall. Its location in a quieter part of eastern Visby is a real plus. Within a few minutes, you can easily stroll into the historic centre, with its restaurants and shops.

A fun bonus is the well-loved pool area that belongs to Kolgården. Honestly, not many centrally located stays can boast a pool. The atmosphere here is relaxed and family-friendly, more about unwinding than partying.

In short, Kolgården is a great pick if you want something simple, comfortable and a bit more independent – without compromising on location or that easy holiday feel.

Time Out tip: Shop for local produce and cook your own meals in the apartment.

Address: Artellerigatan 19

Expect to pay: Around SEK 2,200-3,500 per night
