Visby is an unusually restaurant-packed city. It’s not just in summer, when the lanes and squares fill with tourists from every corner of the globe. In fact, this fairly small city has a huge number of excellent restaurants and places to eat all year round. Inns with white linen tablecloths, Asian sharing menus, seafood feasts or crêpes – the medieval city’s offering is surprisingly broad and fun.

The great thing is that most of the really good places are open all year round, while many of the summer spots are well worth a visit too. In short: Visby packs flavours and experiences from much of the world into a small area. And in many restaurants, there’s a real pride in having something typically Gotlandic on the menu. Do try it!

The best restaurants in Visby 2026

1. Volare

  • 5 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? A cozy wine bar and restaurant tucked away in a medieval cellar in the heart of Visby. Under the vaulted limestone ceiling, the focus is just as much on drinks as on food. The wine list is, naturally, extensive and varied, with plenty of gorgeous wines available by the glass. The à la carte menu has both range and inventiveness.

Why we love it? Here, wines are recommended in a relaxed and professional way by the city’s funniest and most knowledgeable sommelier Natalie and her team. You get to taste, try and choose. It’s never snobbish, just fun and laid-back. Choose a beer or a soft drink instead and no one will mind. Among the dinner guests, you’ll often find groups who only meant to stop by for a glass, but ended up staying for the whole evening. The food is excellent and the menu is updated fairly often. Start with a few small bites like cheese and charcuterie, then move on to well-cooked dinner dishes with the right wine alongside. At Volare, you’ll learn that the ‘right wine’ can mean a great many things. A favourite on the menu is the sharing platter for two, or the month’s variation on something featuring Kalix vendace roe. An evening at Volare is pure bliss for both the palate and the soul.

Time Out tip: Even if you weren’t planning to have dinner here, you should slip in for a glass and some snacks. Be warned, though, you may want to stay.

Address: Strandgatan 20. Price level: Three-course menu without drinks around SEK 500-750.

2. Bakfickan

  • 5 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Cosy fish and seafood restaurant on Stora Torget in Visby. Here you sit on simple wooden chairs at small tables and enjoy truly excellent produce from the sea. The menu revolves around both Gotlandic and more international favourites – like saffron-scented fish and seafood soup, fried Baltic herring and other well-executed dishes.

Why we love it? It really is a little back-pocket spot, where the food delivers every time. Simple, genuine and packed with both locals and visitors squeezed in around the tables. Not sure about the seafood focus? These days, you can actually get a meat dish here too. Bakfickan is open for both lunch and dinner, but it fills up quickly, so plan ahead. In summer, you can have something light and a drink at the restaurant’s small bar just ten steps away, across the alley. In ‘Barfickan’, you sit tucked into the corner of the Sankta Karin church ruin. How cool – and how Gotlandic – is that?

Time Out tip: At least once in your life, you should try the freshly fried, crispy herring served here. You can also buy delicacies over the counter. Take some smoked prawns and aioli with you for a picnic.

Address: Stora Torget 1. Price level: Main courses at dinner around SEK 200-350, lunch cheaper.

3. Värdshuset Lindgården

  • 5 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Historic inn in the centre of Visby, with one of the city’s most wonderful gardens. In this leafy setting, you sit beneath the enormous mulberry tree, surrounded by roses and greenery that create a calm atmosphere.

Why we love it? The garden is a lush oasis in the middle of the city, where the pace slows and dinner feels almost ceremonial. Indoors, it’s elegant, historic and refined. The menu leans towards Swedish and Gotlandic cuisine, with a focus on seasonal ingredients. If you like wallenbergare, you’ll love Lindgården’s version, made from local Linderöd pork. Craving something sweet with an extra Gotland touch? Try the mulberry parfait, made from berries from the restaurant’s own tree. The service is warm and professional, the food is well prepared, beautifully presented and steeped in tradition. Värdshuset Lindgården is a place for long, leisurely dinners rather than quick stops – classic, stylish and very much Visby.

Time Out tip: Book a table in the garden on a summer evening – one of Visby’s most atmospheric dining spots. Or visit the Gin Bar for a top-class drink and a few small bites.

Address: Mellangatan 29. Price level: Main courses around SEK 250-400. Note: Closed for renovation (reopens mid-June 2026).

4. Gamla Masters

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Classic hangout in the heart of Visby’s old town. Gamla Masters is a restaurant that most locals and many visitors have been to at some point. It’s a relaxed mix of bar, bistro and summer terrace. The menu moves between Swedish classics, grilled dishes and simpler plates.

Why we love it? The atmosphere makes Gamla Masters. It’s lively and social, with high-quality food and service, without ever feeling pretentious. Regulars are greeted by name, and photos of former staff, local celebrities and other Gotland personalities hang on the walls. Even out of season, it’s a meeting place where there are always people – before, during or after dinner. The menu is updated regularly. Check out the ‘blackboard special’, the evening’s dish written up on the chalkboard. Just fancy a drink? You might be lucky enough to grab one of the bar tables by the window, with a perfect view of the foot traffic to and from Stora Torget. In summer, the outdoor terrace opens too, with even more buzz. Gamla Masters is the neighbourhood spot you have to visit.

Time Out tip: Gamla Masters’ meatballs are famous for a reason – they’re outrageously good.

Address: Södra Kyrkogatan 10. Price level: Main courses around SEK 200-350.

5. Surfers

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Colourful restaurant in central Visby serving modern Chinese street food. Dishes are made for sharing – the menu is built around small plates packed with flavour, from dumplings to hot and tangy favourites inspired by Sichuan cuisine.

Why we love it? The energy at Surfers is lively and a little cramped – in the best way. The food is full of flavour and perfect for sharing, turning the whole meal into a social experience. It’s relaxed and fun. The bar serves fresh, inventive drinks, with or without alcohol, and plenty of people come just for a drink. If you’re planning dinner, make sure to book in advance. Otherwise, you might have to try your luck with seats at the bar. Struggling to choose from the menu? Let the staff decide. You’ll like it. Personal picks include the prawn balls, the ginger-scented tofu and the sweet-and-spicy ribs.

Time Out tip: Go with a group and share as many dishes as possible – that’s how you get the most out of the menu.

Address: Södra Kyrkogatan 1. Price level: Small plates around SEK 95-185 (recommended 4-5 dishes per person).

6. Växthuset Linds

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Head to the outskirts of Visby and you’ll find the large and popular Växthuset Linds. Inside, among plants, cut flowers and curated interiors, is a restaurant that’s become a real draw thanks to its fresh food and laid-back atmosphere.

Why we love it? It may be unexpected, but inside a lush greenhouse you’ll find a vibrant lunch restaurant. The food is incredibly good and beautifully presented. The menu is based on what’s in season – often with vegetables at the centre, complemented by carefully selected ingredients. Sit down for an excellent lunch, or stop by for coffee and tempting pastries. It’s creative but not complicated. In fact, it’s far from a traditional restaurant setting. It’s more like an exotic green experience, with a delicious lunch thrown in. The crispy schnitzel alone is worth the trip. Or two, just so you can experience it again. In summer, there’s a small, unpretentious outdoor seating area at the back, perfect for both lunch and a coffee.

Time Out tip: The menu changes, but the magical prawn sandwich on levain bread is usually available, as is the classic Gotland dessert saffron pancake. Eat and enjoy!

Address: Sotaregatan 1. Price indication: Lunch dishes around SEK 200. Children’s portions just over SEK 100. Coffee and cake, naturally, cost less.

7. Krönet by Visby

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? The most obvious and festive way to kick off a summer evening. The view over the sea and half the old town’s rooftops and lanes draws people of all ages. Tapas, bubbles and cocktails on the clifftop create that perfect mix of international and Gotlandic.

Why we love it? Of course, the view over Visby at sunset is a big part of the experience. But even if you don’t get a table with the best view, you’re guaranteed to enjoy the atmosphere here at Krönet by Visby. Music flows from the speakers, people come and go. Small and larger groups share tapas and raise a glass. You can absolutely have dinner here, or do what many do: grab something light like sweet potato fries with aioli, red shrimp in chilli or another Mediterranean-style small plate, enjoy it with a drink and then continue your evening around Visby.

Time Out tip: Perfect for hanging out from the afternoon onwards, perhaps sharing a jug of sangria. If it’s full, head next door for an ice cream or two.

Address: Adelsgatan 41. Price level: Tapas or snacks from a few dozen kronor upwards. For a full dinner, mix and match tapas or opt for a main course around SEK 200-300.

8. Mille Lire

  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Relaxed and lively Italian restaurant in central Visby, serving some of the city’s best wood-fired pizza, pasta and other classic Italian dishes with a modern twist. It’s typically Italian – focusing on simple, well-made flavours with fresh ingredients.

Why we love it? Mille Lire has a great buzz, especially in summer when it fills up with both locals and visitors. It’s the kind of place you drop into for a pizza and a glass – and happily stay a while longer. The food is reliably good, the atmosphere relaxed.

Time Out tip: If you can’t get a table but really want that excellent bianco pizza with bresaola and lemon oil, or a classic tomato-based one with a bit of a kick, order takeaway and head to the sea. Sunset and pizza. Hard to beat.

Address: Södra Kyrkogatan 9. Price indication: Pizzas and pasta dishes around SEK 150-220.

9. Crêperie & Logi Visby

  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Crêperie & Logi is a charming restaurant where French galettes and crêpes are served in one of Visby’s most recognisable small buildings, the so-called ‘Strykjärnshuset’. If you’re hungry, go for the savoury buckwheat pancakes. If you’re after something sweeter, the dessert crêpes are the way to go.

Why we love it? Who doesn’t love crêpes, pancakes and galettes? Young or old, hungry or just after a treat. It’s hard not to fall a little in love with the setting, the flavours and the easygoing style of the staff. The concept is simple at heart, but with excellent flavour combinations. If you’re a fan of Västerbotten cheese, prawns, cold-smoked salmon, skagen, crayfish mix with horseradish, vendace roe, crème fraîche, red onion, lemon and rocket, then the galette called ‘Madame’ is for you. The vegetarian option with chèvre, honey, rocket, toasted almonds and emmental is heavenly too. And for a drink? A dry French cider with your steaming hot galette, or a coffee with your sweet crêpe, never goes wrong.

Time Out tip: In summer, there’s also outdoor seating. Open from 11.00, so choose lunch or dinner. Finish with a sweet crêpe!

Address: Wallers plats 3. Price indication: Galettes and crêpes around SEK 115-300.
