An apprentice of the enigmatic Okakura Tenshin, this Meiji-era painter is best known for his numerous depictions of cats. Commemorating 140 years since his birth, this exhibition displays Hishida Shunso's work from a wide variety of angles: more than 100 pieces are shown, including his four paintings designated as Important Cultural Properties – a record for Japanese artists of the modern era. Some pieces will only be displayed for a part of the exhibition period, so going multiple times might make sense. After all, you won't want to miss the famed Black Cat.
