Time Out says

While a whole generation of photographers tried to ape the work of Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama, Kayo Ume just absorbed their spirit. The 32-year-old has made a career of cataloguing the brief moments of humour and weirdness that enliven our everyday lives. (‘I never set them up,’ she said of her photos in 2010. ‘It’s more of a habit than walking around looking around for a photo.’) Her first solo exhibition in a major art museum, Umekayo gives another airing to Ume's early Junior High School Girls series, as well as presenting some more recent moments of serendipity, including her Shutter Chance street snaps.
