'I make pictures of the dead,' explained artist Paddy Shaw when he last exhibited in Tokyo, adding a tad more accurately, 'I render portraits of historic and historical figures.' His opening gambit set the scene perfectly, however; here was an artist well aware of the importance the gothic played in his work. His initial show at Tokyo's Hiromart Gallery came complete with seven severed heads.
The American returns to the same gallery this autumn with Opus 9, a mixed media show similarly influenced by history...and, er, sudoku. To tell the truth, beyond that description, we're really not sure what to expect. Join us for a sneak preview at the opening reception, from 6pm, September 9.
