Collector extraordinaire Ryutaro Takahashi's collection, which continues to play a major role on the Japanese contemporary art scene, is once again in the spotlight at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. A psychiatrist by trade, Takahashi started collecting art professionally during the 1990s, helping raise the profiles of names like Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Makoto Aida and Kenji Yanobe, all of whom are now internationally recognised. Drawn from a deposit of more than 2,000 items, this exhibit displays around 140 pieces from 52 different artists, aiming to provide a holistic and historical look at the development of contemporary art in Japan.
