The newly renovated Edo-Tokyo Museum's spring special focuses on the legendary battle of October 21, 1600, in which the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu routed the Toyotomi clan and its allies, opening the way for the Tokugawas to eventually unify all of Japan under their banner. Held 400 years after the death of the first shogun, 'The Great Battle of Sekigahara' consists of more than 250 items, from weapons and armour to paintings and documents recording the battle, plus a massive computer-generated 3D map illustrating the battlefield and the troops' movements on it. Most of the explanatory texts are in Japanese only, so we recommend reading up on the battle and its background before visiting.
