Duncan Phillips opened America's first modern art museum in Washington, DC in 1921, turning part of his family home into a gallery space that would eventually take over the entire building. Half of the works in the museum's 2,400-strong collection are by American artists, and it's these that are showcased at the National Art Center, Tokyo's latest exhibition. The selection ranges from heavyweights such as Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock and Georgia O'Keeffe to the likes of folk artist Grandma Moses.
