Kid brother of peerless West Coast beatmaker Madlib, Michael 'Oh No' Jackson has had a lot of living up to do. Rather than be intimidated by his sibling's vast oeuvre, Oh No has focused on creating his own distinctive body of boom-bap, often limiting himself to a specific selection of sample sources – be it '60s and '70s Ethiopian music on Dr. No's Ethiopium (2009), or the back catalogue of musician/comedian Rudy Ray Moore (aka Dolemite) on the just-released Dr. No's Kali Tornado Funk. He'll be showing off some of his freshest beats at Sound Museum Vision this Friday, in a gig that doubles up as a release party for local goofball Zen-La-Rock and his La Pharaoh Magic EP.
