Tokyo’s annual LGBT film festival, Rainbow Reel Tokyo is celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. Their first round of screenings will be held at Tokyo Women’s Plaza Hall from July 5 to 6, and then at Spiral Hall from July 12 to 15. Both locations are just a few minutes’ walk from Omotesando Station.
This years’ films showcase a variety of cultures and genres, including the 2019 Japanese romance about a former athlete who falls for another man following a post-divorce bender in Shinjuku Ni-chome (‘Athlete’), a lesbian rom-com about Emily Dickinson (‘Wild Nights with Emily’, 2018), and a collection of short films with the theme of ‘bittersweet’ that includes a Venice Film Festival winner (‘QUEER×APAC 2019’). Films that are not in English will have English subtitles. Moreover, some of the screenings include Q&A sessions or meet-and-greets – see the official website for more information.
Single tickets can be purchased in advance for ¥1,400 via Ticket Pia or in person at Lumiere Shinjuku and Spiral. Otherwise, you can get same-day tickets at the door at the screening venues for ¥1,700. There are also passes starting from ¥5,200. More ticketing details here.
