When Eric Khoo's My Magic was selected for the main competition at Cannes in 2008, Singaporean cinema barely registered on the international movie circuit. That's slowly been changing during the past few years, as evidenced by the mere existence of Sintok, Tokyo's very own Singaporean film fest. First held in 2009, the event returns this year with a program showcasing some of the big names from the city-state's emerging movie industry. There's a showcase of films by 881 director Royston Tan, whose 12 Lotus opens the festival, with other notable flicks including Boo Junfeng's poignant Sandcastle and visual artist Ho Tzu Nyen's directorial debut, Here. An English-language timetable is available for download here.
