Less than a year ago, Anderson .Paak was a little-known singer, songwriter and session musician from California. The 30-year-old had spent the preceding decade playing drums in church and in various cover bands. Both his parents and his stepfather had been to prison, he had drifted in and out of homelessness and he even worked on a marijuana farm with his pregnant wife to make ends meet. But after a series of immense vocal performances on Dr Dre’s Compton album, he's broken out as a rising star with a rep for incredible live shows – Dre and Kendrick Lamar popped up out of the blue at his Coachella gig back in April.
