Raised in Arizona but based in Portland – where she also plays with folk group Loch Lomond – Laurel Simmons began to record songs under her MayMay moniker while she was pining for the warmer climes of her old home. Her hushed, delicate ballads recently earned her a release on Japan's Flau label, that reliable bastion of all things hushed and delicate, which put out debut album And So I Place You in the Setting Sun this week. MayMay will be airing songs from the record on Friday night at Vacant, a venue that lends itself particularly well to such intimate music. Piano and steel drum duo Utsukushiki Hikari and guitarist Hayato Aoki offer suitably low-key support.
