Matthew Sweet plays ‘Girlfriend’

Though there was a brief moment at the start of the ’90s when it looked like he might follow in the footsteps of old buddies R.E.M., power pop singer Matthew Sweet ended up becoming more of a cult figure – albeit one with a strong following here in Japan. He returns this weekend to reprise the album for which he’s best remembered, 1991’s effervescent Girlfriend, though sadly it won’t be with the band who played on the original record.
