The Lagos-born drummer who served as musical director for Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band from 1968 to 1979, Tony Allen was one of the key architects of the ass-shaking music we now know as Afrobeat. It's a sound that continues to enjoy a strong following in Japan, and Allen will be hooking up with some of his most devoted acolytes when he hits Tokyo this month: festival-honed party band Kingdom Afrocks. Bring your dancing shoes: you're going to need them.
