ANA First Sunrise Flight 2013

The sight of the sun rising over Mt Fuji on New Year's Day has been a source of inspiration for aeons, but these days you can watch it from over Mt Fuji. Both ANA and JAL offer special early-morning flights on January 1, which place passengers in the vicinity of Japan's most famous peak just as the sun is starting to come up. The ANA flight (you can get details on JAL's alternative here) departs from Haneda Airport at 5.35am, and will have you back on the ground by 8am. It's a premium service with an appropriately premium price: pair tickets start at ¥80,000 (¥50,000 if you don't mind foregoing a window seat), though this includes a bento, nihonshu, commemorative certificate and assorted memorabilia. Tickets go on sale from November 22.
